Chief of Staff - Toronto City Councillor

The Office of City Councillor Rachel Chernos Lin is seeking a Chief of Staff to lead the Ward 15 – Don Valley West team.

Role Summary

 

As the Councillor’s key advisor, the Chief of Staff is responsible for issues management, communications, and managing the office team. The Chief of Staff reports directly to the Councillor and provides real-time strategic advice to manage risk and support decision-making.

 

Key Qualifications; 

 

  • Minimum 3 years of management experience;

  • Strong understanding of Toronto City Council and municipal government;

  • Proven ability to solve complex problems;

  • Excellent research and communication skills;

  • Experience managing diverse projects to achieve strategic objectives; and

  • Enjoys working in a fast-paced, dynamic environment

 

Education Requirement: Bachelor's degree, Master’s degree is an asset.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Lead issues management and provide strategic and timely advice to the Councillor on high-profile matters, including during City Council and Committee meetings.

  • Develop strategic plans to advance the Councillor’s policy agenda and key local projects.

  • Build strong relationships with stakeholders and community groups.

  • Oversee strategic communications, including media relations, speech writing, social media strategy, key message development, and the production of monthly newsletters. 

  • Manage the office budget and team, including staff development, workforce planning, and performance management.

  • Supervise high-volume constituency casework operations, ensuring the team is meeting response time standards.

  • Research key policy issues and prepare briefing notes, speeches, and draft motions on key items in advance of City Council and Committee meetings.

  • Represent the Councillor at meetings with key stakeholders and constituents.

  • Monitor emerging issues that may have an impact on the local constituency and the Councillor’s key policy priorities.

  • Work closely with City staff across divisions to solve complex problems.

 

The position is full-time and based out of our office at Toronto City Hall, 100 Queen Street West. Some evening and weekend work will be required.​

Salary will be commensurate with experience, but between the range of $95,000 - $105,000 annually. Position provides a comprehensive benefits package.
